SUGGESTIONS FOR REFLECTING ON A
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION RELATIONSHIP (THESE ARE JUST SUGGESTIONS FOR
PRAYERFUL REFLECTION, DON'T TRY TO "ANSWER" ALL OF
THEM, JUST SEE IF THEY TRIGGER ANYTHING THAT MIGHT NEED SOME
ATTENTION OR DISCUSSION.)
GENERAL: As you reflect on the relationship, what basic feelings
do you have? (peacefulness, uneasiness, worry, gratitude, etc.)
CONTENT: Does it feel as though the relationship has been dealing
sufficiently with specific spiritual direction issues? (prayer,
sense of and responses to God, etc.) Are there areas that are not
adequately dealt with?
FREEDOM: Are there any significant restrictions on your sense of
freedom in the relationship? (things you feel hesitant to
discuss, concerns about the other's feelings, feelings from
contacts with each other outside direction sessions, compensation
or contribution issues, personal attachments or resentments,
etc.)
ROLES: Is the directee freely making and claiming his/her own
perceptions and decisions, or is the director assuming too much
of an authority role? Is the degree of self-disclosure on the
director's part appropriate?
PRAYER: Are director and directee committed to praying for each
other outside the meetings? What is the sense of prayerfulness
(contemplative presence) during the meetings?
FRUITS: What seems to be some of the overall effects or results
of this relationship? Does it actually seem to be nurturing the
spiritual lives and hearts of director and directee? Does it seem
to be furthering real lovingness toward other people?
