MAYAN CHARTER

WE, THE MAYAN PEOPLE, COMMITTED to the responsibility of saving the succeeding generations of our people from the scourge of poverty which in our life time has brought untold sorrow to our people, while reaffirming faith in the fundamental dignity and worth of every human person, we seek to promote the social progress and a more adequate standard of life within a collective freedom for our people. AND FOR THESE PURPOSES to practice tolerance and to live together in peace with one another as good neighbors, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and institution of methods, the promotion of economic and social advancement for people. Therefore, WE HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS.

Article 1. Within our respective autonomous regions to uphold a quintralateral citizenship, to maintain the unity of our people in peace and security.

Article 2. To develop relations among the Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico governments, to work conjointly with us to establish and preserve the rights and self-determination of all our people.

Article 3. To promote the respect for human rights of all our people.

Article 4. In order to preserve and foster our unique ancient culture, acknowledging what has already de facto been done in recognition of our citizenship in the five nations, we affirm our quintralateral citizenship and call for it to be recognized in the constitutive law of the Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico governments. There should be a harmonious concord in the policies of all five nations in our regard.

The enabling preservation of our culture calls for the acknowledgment of our right to self-development, the protection of our environment, and the education of our people in a way that accords with our own proper heritage and traditions.

Article 5. The highest priority is to be given to mandating, jointly and without delay, the recognition of our quintralateral citizenship.

Article 6. At this time when the world is taking a significant step toward its full integrity through the reintegration and sustainability of the complete human family . We call upon all our brothers and sisters who respect and rejoice in the diversity of cultures that enriches our human family to join with us in seeking the implementation of these resolutions.
